Underwears are coming OUT

Last month, we were at a industry event for the lingerie, swimwear and intimate apparel industry. It was a great place to do business as usual but the thing that struck us was how underwear and intimate apparel as a clothing item is being redefined into a statement accessory.

Underwear is no longer an item that disappears when you put on pants. It is stylish to offer a glimpse of your underwear from your pants. Underwear are tattooed. Underwear has attitude. Underwear is a conversation piece during those intimate moments. 'Package Underwear' was popular at the show (not because they come packaged in the carton). There was 'rounderwear' for flat butts and 'Conewear' for flat busts. Basically, marketers were trying out ways to charge $40 for a piece of clothing that costs 40c to make (no kidding...you can make 5 panties from a yard of lace).

Jokes apart, we saw the most fresh ideas in one place on how to turn underwear into a fashion accessory and a style statement. There were fresh prints, new cuts, bold colors, technical fabrics and amazing personalities (of the underwear) in full display at the show. Hanes booth with their 4 pack boxers for $8.99 still got some traffic but the buzz was at these young booths trying to sign up retailers into their new idea of an underwear.

Nvie Designs will start carrying some of these new brands in the coming months for those of you who want the conversation to go on when the lights go out.

Top Colors for Fall 2011 announced by Pantone

Announcing top colors for spring and fall every year is a fashion industry ritual. Pantone, which is a grand daddy of colors surveys top designers in NYC and comes up with a consensus on which colors are being used by designers for that season.
This list is nothing more than the opinion of a few designers but then these designers are trend setters in their own right. So expect these colors to become popular for the upcoming Fall 2011 season.

The above chart shows top colors for womens fashion this fall. Based on our experience, the only surprise in the above list is honeysuckle as traditionally it is a spring color. Emberglow which is a new entrant does look good and has promise. But the biggest winner will be deep teal. Teal has already been rising as the shade of choice in the blue family for sometime now (people seem to be getting bored with Navy).

The second chart above is for mens colors for Fall 2011. Again, the winner we think will be deep teal. The others either do not have mass appeal or are too bold to be carried correctly by an average guy.

But again as we say 'Fashion is Fleeting'. These colors are here today, gone tomorrow. Whether you pay attention to these 'in season' colors or ignore them is completely up to you. But remember that 'Style is Forever'. If you are one of those who choose to wear hot pink dress in fall and top it off with a matching pair of shoes and handbag and carry it with your unique style and manage to turn heads and feel that the world is under your feet, you are our kind of a gal. Do your own thing and Live well in Style.
